So when did scientists think it was a good idea to start playing God with our food? When did politicians think this was a good idea? How many 'Dr Frankensteins' are out there? Will there ever be an end to this madness? Don't hold your breath, because it will likely never end.
You have to understand the beginning to understand how it may all end. Most of us are aware of the story of Dr Frankenstein, and the evolution of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) is simply a replication of an idea that goes badly wrong. If we know the beginning, and we know the end, why do all the 'Dr Frankensteins' who exist out there continue with their work? It's all down to egos, ambitions, ideology, and most importantly, money and politics. Always the same old story.
There was a time when science was for the betterment of society. Now it is the time for the modification of society. The term 'betterment' is now an excuse used to conceal other more selfish and ambitious purposes.
It is said Hitler wanted to create a 'master race'. Do we really believe he was just a single exception? Do we believe that his dream would not be repeated? The only question is who will be in a position of sufficient authority to repeat this process? Genetic engineers are now promoted not as the new Hitlers, but wearing the clothes of angels. But they do not really differ. World domination of a race of people is similar to the world domination of an entire environment. It's just that the target is different now. But the mentality has not changed.
So how did this insanity begin? And who thought it was a great idea to hand over the genetic modification of our agriculture, and other natural assets, to private concerns?
Sadly, scientists do think this way sometimes. Failing to grasp reality, or are unwilling to accept the consequences of their actions, they plug on regardless. After all, it's great fun playing around in the laboratory - isn't it?
Joking aside, the devastation threatening our planet through genetic modification is not funny. Quite the reverse, it is deadly serious. It's as though the 'buy-one-get-one-free' attitude of savvy shoppers does not stop at the supermarket checkout. The psychology of stuffing bellies is adapted to increasing food production at any cost. Cannot grow enough food to feed an increasing world population? Then change the food supply. Increase the output using the same tactics employed by supermarkets - to get you to try something that is 'free'. The objective is to get you hooked on that product so you will buy it again at the regular price. So how many people are hooked on the idea of 'Frankensteining' our food supply to achieve similar ends? Much less wastage and therefore lower prices. And so the process begins.
Although the first real genetic engineering began in the 1970s, food modification did not appear until the 1980s. Wikipedia states ...
"The first genetically modified crop, an antibiotic-resistant tobacco plant, was produced in 1982. China was the first country to commercialize transgenic plants, introducing a virus-resistant tobacco in 1992. In 1994 Calgene attained approval to commercially release the Flavr Savr tomato, the first genetically modified food. Also in 1994, the European Union approved tobacco engineered to be resistant to the herbicide bromoxynil, making it the first genetically engineered crop commercialized in Europe. An insect resistant Potato was approved for release in the US in 1995, and by 1996 approval had been granted to commercially grow 8 transgenic crops and one flower crop (carnation) in 6 countries plus the EU."

The big apple (and no, I'm not talking about New York). Genetic modification, and especially of food, is a sacred cow. It's something like the fluoridation of water supplies. With fluoridation, we already know it's based upon non-existent real science. It's based upon contrived statistics that even a 5-year-old can understand as being worthless. It's based upon an industry with a toxic waste product with nowhere to dispose of it. It's based upon a political agenda. All-in-all, water fluoridation shows how corrupt and idiotic the entire process is.
The question we must ask of the genetic engineering of our food supply is this: is the same mentality being practised here?
"Genes are only transferred between closely related organisms." - Wikipedia
Take for example the humble apple. Not content to leave it alone, to see what happens when it is not in the best condition, scientists invented a new modification of the fruit called the 'Arctic Apple'. The modification taking place here is 'cisgenic'. This means that unlike transgenic, gene editing is done using the fruit's own genetic code. 'Keeping it in the family', you may say. Work on the new apple began in the late 1990s, but the finished product did not appear until the early 2000s.
It's a bit like cross-breeding different types of apple to create a new variety, but in this case, all offspring varieties still suffer from the same problem - 'browning'. OK, browning occurs very quickly, and we know that once you have sliced an apple, this effect happens after a short time. But why worry about browning? If you pick up an apple, and eat it straight away, browning is not really an issue. So why mess about with the humble apple? It's all down to modern society. Apple slices are now packed to save you the problem of actually having to bite into a whole apple. It's also down to wanting a bit of an apple, but not all of it. So, if you just want a few slices, maybe just as a small treat, or maybe to clean your palate, these packs of apple slices may seem ideal. And they do not brown so quickly if they are genetically modified. Perfect, you may think. But let's ask the question of necessity. Are we genetically modifying food to pander to a society that relies more heavily on convenience as each year passes? Are we going to modify everything under the sun just so we have convenience?
Then there is the question of chemical sprays. What has your shiny new apple been sprayed with? The boast about Arctic Apples is they require no additional (note the word 'additional') sprays to protect them from pests. It is said they are no different from conventionally grown apples in this respect. But aren't apples sprayed with pesticides to stop them being damaged by some form of pest. And what about other diseases?
The only really natural apple is an organically grown one. Anything else is a pretence, a fake, an imposter. Natural means naturally grown. Organic. Period. And the bottom line on Arctic Apples is do not be deceived by the glib advertising and promotions. See them for what they are - unnatural.
Moving on from cisgenic engineering, lets look at transgenic engineering. 'Transgenic' essentially means inserting genetic code from an alien product to achieve similar aims.
There have been experiments which have taken place. Some have failed. Some briefly made it to market, and then failed. There are also 'mythical' stories floating around cyberspace making claims about genetically-modified food which are not accurate. But none of this lessens from the impact of ongoing and future developments.
Putting it simply, there are only two camps here. Either the scientists are conducting reckless experiments, or their work is being applauded. There is no middle ground. You are either for or against genetic engineering.
The argument for transgenics is not really any different from cisgenics. Transgenics is essentially another step up a ladder to ... God knows where? It's a leap in the dark where scientists put their faith in what they think is justifiable, but cannot put a stamp of authority upon their work to say there will be no repercussions. Basically, it's like having your (genetically engineered) cake and eating it.
The problem with regulation is that decision makers are generally uneducated idiots. I am, of course, talking about politicians. They simply listen to 'advice' given to them by 'experts' and make decisions based upon such advice. Therein is the biggest problem.
So how much more dangerous are transgenic experiments compared to their 'little sister', cisgenics? Sorry about the pun.
Transgenics is introducing something that is potentially entirely alien to another biological entity. Scientists are creating chimeras. They are the architects of a Biblical phenomena known as the creation of nephilim. In other words, make it more exotic, make it better, make it bigger, or all three. Where does it end? How far can it go?
Nephilim? It is said that these creature are the result of angels mating with humans. Transgenics are just like that. Take something that is completely alien to a living organism and bingo! You have, in effect, a brand new species! It may look like the original entity, but it is so much more special - but not always in a good way. It could be said that the scientists are 'gods', and that the genetic materials they insert into other biological organisms is just like the 'fallen angels' who mated with human women. You create giants that look human. So, it can be easily argued that transgenic products are ungodly creations.

Ethics: who cares? Rule book? That went out of the window a long time ago. Now we are onto the crazy ideas. Or are they crazily wonderful ideas? Firstly, take a look at this ...
Cue the crazy look in the scientist's eyes. Cue the dark laboratory. Cue the screams of terror. Action!
We have reached the end of this story of genetic modified food. But we should just give a mention to all the other crazy 'stunts' going on out there.
This is the stuff of nightmares. It's the sort of thing you would never have seen in the 'Addams Family', or 'The Munsters'. It goes well beyond that.

To be honest, I cannot say any more than use your imagination. Whatever insane ideas you can conjure up in your mind, then it's possible someone is making them a reality in a laboratory somewhere on the planet.
Isn't it wonderful our future is in the hands of such people? No? Too right!
